Video TourBuilt at the edge of a canyon in South Park, this two bedroom carriage house ADU makes the most of its setting with a private deck overlooking downtown San Diego and the bay.
The project began with demolishing the existing detached garage and building a new two-car garage with an ADU above. Building at the edge of the canyon required a more extensive stem wall foundation with deepened footings, making the site conditions an important part of the design and construction process. Inside, the open-concept living room and kitchen create a comfortable gathering space, with sliding glass doors leading out to the deck. The homeowner added a movable kitchen island with barstools, creating extra counter space for meal prep and a casual spot to dine. A white subway tile backsplash adds a classic finish to the kitchen, while the connection to the deck makes the view part of everyday life.
Both bedrooms have their own ensuite full bathroom, offering privacy for roommates or visiting guests. The bathrooms feature white tile surrounds, with a walk-in shower in one and a shower/tub combination in the other. One bathroom also opens to the living area, so guests can access it without walking through a bedroom. In-unit laundry rounds out the practical features that make the home comfortable for stays lasting weeks or months.

The homeowner plans to offer the ADU as a furnished mid-term rental for travel nurses and other tenants who need a place to settle in for a while.
