Homeowner Story: Bring aging family closer
This completed two bedroom, two bathroom ADU in San Diego was designed to give the homeowners’ aging parents a comfortable, independent living space while keeping family close. The semi-custom design makes the most of the available space, with an open-concept layout, vaulted ceilings, and three skylights that bring in plenty of natural light. The homeowners also kept the ADU under 750 square feet to avoid impact fees and help manage project costs.
Located on a corner lot, the detached ADU was designed to blend in with the existing property. Stucco walls and a clay tile roof match the main house, giving the new unit a cohesive look. Paver patios wrap around the ADU, creating outdoor areas for seating and relaxing, while mature palm trees and bougainvillea help maintain privacy between the homes. The primary bedroom also features a sliding glass door that opens directly onto the patio, providing easy access to the outdoor space.
Inside, the kitchen features white cabinetry, quartz countertops, and stainless steel appliances. Both bathrooms include navy vanities and glass-enclosed showers. Ductless mini-splits in each bedroom allow for individual temperature control, and a stacked washer and dryer provides convenient in-unit laundry.
